Turning global commitment into action for lung health
The #KeepBreathing campaign brings together patient organisations, healthcare professionals and partners to call for coordinated European action on lung health.
In 2025, the World Health Assembly adopted the landmark resolution “Promoting and prioritizing an integrated lung health approach”. Europe must now turn this global commitment into stronger prevention, earlier diagnosis, equitable care and policies that put people with respiratory diseases at the centre. Watch the Video
Our call for a European Lung Health Plan
Five priorities for Europe to #KeepBreathing
Europe needs a coordinated approach that recognises respiratory health as a public health, social and economic priority. #KeepBreathing calls for action across the full patient pathway, supported by stronger patient involvement and accountability.
Awareness and empowerment
Improve lung health literacy, challenge stigma and ensure that patients and patient organisations are involved in every decision that affects them.
The underlying vision calls for a united respiratory voice, greater public understanding, evidence-based information and stronger patient participation in policy and research.
Prevention
Protect lung health by acting on air pollution, tobacco, occupational and environmental risks, vaccination and earlier detection.
Prevention should become a normal part of healthcare and public policy, including clean-air action, stronger tobacco regulation, screening and measures that prevent disease progression.
Equitable care
Guarantee timely diagnosis and access to high-quality, integrated and person-centred care, regardless of where people live.
This includes the right treatment at the right time, multidisciplinary care, self-management support, digital health and action to reduce inequalities between European countries.
Research and innovation
Invest in patient-led research, better data and innovation that respond to real needs and improve people’s lives.
Patients should help set research priorities, while Europe strengthens clinical trials, registries, real-world evidence, environmental research and responsible digital innovation.
Investment and accountability
Give respiratory health dedicated funding and measure whether investment delivers better outcomes for patients and society.
Funding should support prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, innovation and resilient health systems, with transparent monitoring of outcomes and return on investment.
A European Lung Health Plan should bring these priorities together and turn global commitments into coordinated action across Europe.
